Finding Relief for Head and Neck Lymphedema
Are you a cancer survivor who’s started noticing persistent swelling in your face, neck, or jaw? Have swallowing or speaking become more difficult? You could be experiencing lymphedema, a condition that often develops after cancer treatment and causes intense swelling in the affected area.
Starting Physical Therapy for Head and Neck cancers early is the key to avoiding severe fibrosis, and chronic swelling, tightening of the soft tissues and supporting swallow function.
Understanding Head and Neck Lymphedema
Head and neck lymphedema is a common side effect of cancer treatment, especially with lymph node removal and/or radiation. It occurs when the lymphatic system is compromised causing fluid buildup in the face, jaw, neck, and throat.
This swelling may start internally, often affecting the esophagus and windpipe before it becomes visible. If you’ve noticed sensations of tightness or fullness in your neck or face after treatment, you may be experiencing lymphedema.
Symptoms to Watch For
- Swelling in the face, neck, or under the chin
- A feeling of tightness or heaviness in the neck or jaw
- Difficulty swallowing
- Changes in speech or voice
- Reduced movement in the head and neck
