Recovery after DIEP Flap Reconstruction Surgery
DIEP breast reconstruction (deep inferior epigastric perforator flap) is an advanced microsurgical technique that is used to rebuild the breast/s lost to mastectomy. Excess fat from below the belly button is transplanted to the chest to give back volume and shape to your new breasts. This newer approach to breast reconstruction is much gentler than and now preferred as a first choice over older breast reconstruction techniques known as “TRAM” and “Latissimus Flaps”, which cut through your muscle and impact strength and stability.
At Beyond Therapy and Wellness, our specially trained therapists will help you through your recovery. Most women will have post-surgical precautions that may include avoiding full upright posture for 1-2 weeks after surgery, lifting limitations, and avoidance of the use of abdominal muscles for up to 12 weeks. Our specialized recovery program helps you regain your range of motion in the shoulders, abdomen, and hips and reduce your pain. This includes working on scar tissue, cording, and other soft tissue restrictions that accompany this surgery. Gradual and progressive stretching and strengthening exercises are also an important part of recovery.
Our goal is to return to you all your favorite activities including exercise classes, running, yoga, or your favorite hobbies such as gardening or pickleball.
We have multiple Certified Lymphedema Therapists in Bedford, TX who can educate, assess, and treat you for lymphedema and other post-breast cancer limitations. Seeing women restore their health and bodies is our passion!
