Diastasis Recti

Diastasis recti is the separation of the rectus abdominus muscle that can commonly occur during pregnancy, obesity, or during labor from prolonged pushing.

Common symptoms include:

◊ Feeling a weakness in the back and abdomen

◊ Back pain

◊ Separation of the abdominals while laying or attempting to do a crunch or sit up

◊ A doming out of the center of the abdomen is also commonly seen .

Physical Therapy interventions include patient education of basic movements, abdominal splinting recommendations, and specific abdominal muscle training to decrease pressure on rectus abdominis. The focus is to allow the fascia (linea alba) between rectus abdominis to harden and pull the muscles back together.
